Shore Leave Lager
Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum decided to partner with Westbrook Brewing Co. to create a limited-edition lager that honors the sailors that once served aboard the USS Yorktown and USS Laffey.
They wanted to create a taste of history.
The Story
Behind the Name
In World War II, aircraft carriers were the floating cities of the U.S. Navy. Everything you needed to care for 3,000 men was aboard.
Want a book? The library was open and ready. Ready to unwind? Sailors could screen movies in the hangar bay. Hungry after a long shift? The galley served four meals— that’s roughly 30,000 plates every day!
What was missing, though, was time on dry land or a drink after a hard day. Those pleasures were only granted during shore leave, a guaranteed amount of time off the ship to rest and unwind.
From luaus in Hawaii to impromptu beach parties at Leyte Gulf, the location didn’t matter once they could relax from the pressures of war.
